Berlin Flat Finder vs WG-Gesucht, Kleinanzeigen, and joining the groups yourself
Short version: they cover different markets, and the one you need depends on how long you are staying.
Almost every argument about where to look for a flat in Berlin is really an argument about which market. Permanent unfurnished lets, furnished long stays and three-month sublets are three separate markets with three separate populations of poster, and the sites that serve them barely overlap. Picking the wrong one is why people spend six weeks getting nowhere.

WG-Gesucht
The default, and rightly so: it is the largest shared-flat site in Germany, it has been running for two decades, and for a permanent WG room it is where the demand actually is. If you are staying a year, start there and take it seriously — a good profile and a written-not-pasted message still decide most of it.
Where it is weak is the short end. A three-month Zwischenmiete on WG-Gesucht competes with several hundred applicants, and the effort of posting it there — a full ad, a profile, verification — is disproportionate for someone letting their room out while they are in Portugal for the summer. So most of them do not bother. They post four lines in a group chat instead, and it is gone the same evening.
Use both. They are not substitutes. WG-Gesucht for the permanent search, the groups for the interim place that stops you paying for a hostel while you do it.
Kleinanzeigen
Berlin’s classifieds, and genuinely useful — there is real stock on it, including sublets, and it is free to browse and post. What you are trading is signal-to-noise. The housing categories carry a heavy load of agency reposts, furnished-flat operators, duplicate ads and the occasional outright fraud, and there is very little structure to filter on: the price field is inconsistently used, dates live in the body text, and “Zwischenmiete” is a word in a description rather than a field.
In practice that means a lot of manual reading, and the same scam patterns described in our guide to sublet fraud turn up there more than most places. Worth having open. Not worth relying on alone.
Joining the twelve groups yourself
This is the real alternative, and we should be straight about it: it is free, it works, and it is what we do — we read the same groups anyone can join. If you have the time, you do not need us.
The reason people stop doing it has nothing to do with access and everything to do with volume. A dozen active Berlin housing groups produce a continuous stream of messages, of which a minority are offers at all — the rest are people searching, replies, thanks, and arguments about whether posting in English is allowed. The offers arrive at every hour in German, English and Spanish, cross-posted to five groups so you read each one repeatedly, with the price in the fourth paragraph or a photo of a handwritten note.
So the honest comparison is not “free versus €10”, it is:
- Notifications on: your phone buzzes all day, you stop reading them within a week, and you miss the one that mattered on a Tuesday afternoon.
- Notifications off: you check in the evening, and everything good was answered at eleven that morning.
- Either way, you re-read the same cross-posted flat five times and hold the filtering — is it my area, my budget, my dates — in your head.
That is the job we do. You still get the poster’s Telegram handle and you still write the message yourself — that part is not automatable and automating it is how you get ignored.

Cost, honestly
WG-Gesucht and Kleinanzeigen are free to browse. Joining Telegram groups is free. We are €10 a month with a 7-day trial, which is only worth it if reading a dozen group chats every evening is worth more than that to you. For someone with a job and four weeks to find somewhere, it usually is; for someone with time and patience, it honestly might not be. Either way the comparison to keep in mind is a Berlin agency fee, which is two months’ rent.
